Histoire de la psychologie du sport

brain2-2Si la psychologie du sport est une science récente (dans les années 1980 en France) son origine remonte néanmoins au XIXe siècle. Son histoire se découpe en cinq périodes dont chacune est illustrée par des personnes et des événements particuliers.

Les premières années (1895 –1920) :
1897 : première expérience scientifique en psychologie du sport pour étudier les effets de la présence d’autrui sur la performance.
La psychologie du sport débute vers 1890 en Amérique du Nord avec Norman Triplett, un psychologue de l’université de l’Indiana et passionné de cyclisme.
Il s’interroge sur le fait que les cyclistes qui courent en équipe courent plus vite que lorsqu’ils courent seuls, pour un contre-la-montre par exemple.
Pour vérifier son hypothèse, il réalise une expérience dans laquelle des enfants doivent enrouler aussi rapidement que possible une corde sur un moulinet. Les résultats de son expérimentation montrent que les enfants enroulent plus de corde lorsqu’ils s’exécutent en présence d’un autre enfant.
D’autres études par la suite vont infirmer ce résultat.

1899 : E.W.Scripture décrit les traits de personnalité susceptibles de se développer grâce au sport. Ses recherches portent essentiellement sur les bienfaits de l’activité physique.
Le développement de la psychologie comme science a incité les psychologues à rechercher de nouveaux domaines d’études. Le domaine sportif a alors constitué pour certains un domaine privilégié permettant l’étude des facteurs psychologiques reliés à la performance motrice.
Parallèlement les recherches en psychologie du sport se développent en Allemagne et en Russie.

L’époque de Griffith (1921 1938).
Psychologue, il met sur pied le premier laboratoire de psychologie sportive. Il participe également à la création de l’une des premières écoles d’entraîneur aux États-Unis et écrit deux ouvrages sur la psychologie du sport.
Il décrit les profils psychologiques de figures emblématiques de l’équipe de base-ball. Il échange également avec des entraîneurs sur la préparation psychologique d’une équipe. Il montre un engagement un intérêt particulier pour l’amélioration des pratiques sportives.
Aux Etats-Unis, la psychologie du sport fut principalement influencée par la théorie de la personnalité et le concept de trait.
Parallèlement, la psychologie du sport se développe en Allemagne, au Japon et en Russie, sans pour autant qu’il y ait échange entre eux.

Mise en place d’un savoir scientifique sur la psychologie du sport. (1939-1978).
Lors de cette période, la psychologie du sport est influencée à la fois par l’éducation physique mais aussi par la psychologie. En découle alors deux orientations : la première se développe dans une perspective appliquée et répond ainsi aux besoins précis du milieu sportif et la deuxième orientation vers le domaine théorique et conceptuel développé dans les laboratoires.

Franklin Henry, de l’Université de Berkeley, voue sa carrière à l’étude des facteurs psychologiques dans le domaine sportif et l’acquisition des habiletés motrices. Il forme également de nombreux étudiants qui eux même entreprennent de former d’autres professionnels et enrichissent les données scientifiques sur le sport.
La période 1950 à 1965 est considérée comme la période durant laquelle la psychologie du sport s’est le plus développée, période qui correspond à l’essor des fondements théoriques en psychologie.

Les théories de la personnalité, de la gestalt, de la motivation influencent fortement le courant de la psychologie du sport.
Vers le milieu des années 1960, l’éducation physique a déjà atteint le statut de discipline universitaire et la psychologie sportive en constitue une base.
Le système sociopolitique des pays précurseurs en psychologie du sport marque profondément l’orientation en psychologie du sport.
En Union Soviétique par exemple, la psychologie du sport est planifiée par le gouvernement dans une perspective d’ensemble, contrôlée et orientée vers l’atteinte de performances maximales en compétitions sportives internationales (Schneidman, 1979). Elle se développe donc dans une perspective appliquée plutôt que fondamentale, avec le concept de préparation psychologique à la compétition instaurée au cours des années 1960.

En Europe et aux États-Unis, les sujets d’études sont principalement axés sur l’étude du stress et de ses effets sur la performance, ainsi que l’étude des traits de personnalité. L’évaluation de la personnalité au moyen de tests a constitué un des sujets de recherche le plus souvent investigué durant cette période. Les ouvrages sur le thème de la psychologie du sport prolifèrent.

En France, dès 1950, auprès de l’équipe de France de ski de piste, A.Bouvet met en place une batterie de tests d’évaluation et en vérifie sa validité. Il initie le yoga comme moyen de préparation psychologique. Mais sa démarche novatrice ne reçoit que de très rares échos.

A partir de 1965 la psychologie du sport a été reconnue comme discipline structurée, autonome, scientifique et comme profession.
L’évaluation des traits de personnalité en milieu sportif, principal sujet de recherche de la période précédente, est peu à peu abandonné.
Les recherches, principalement effectuées en laboratoire, s’orientent davantage vers les théories de la facilitation sociale ou celle du renforcement social.
Aux jeux olympiques de Mexico, en 1968, des psychologues du sport comme M.Vanek (Tchèque) et B.J.Cratty (Américain) interviennent régulièrement auprès des équipes nationales. Après de multiples échanges sur leur pratique, ils écrivent un ouvrage pionnier : « psychologie sportive et compétition ».

Vers la fin des années 1970, Martens a cependant provoqué un autre changement majeur en remettant en cause les résultats obtenus en laboratoire. psy-sportLes recherches s’orientent alors dans une perspective appliquée, avec pour objet principal le développement des habiletés psychologiques telles que la pratique mentale de la gestion du stress (Landers,1983).
Cet intérêt pour la psychologie appliquée n’a cessé de croître jusqu’à nos jours, parce qu’elle doit répondre à la demande de plus en plus importante du milieu sportif mais aussi parce qu’elle est devant la nécessité de démontrer l’efficacité de ses méthodes.

Les champs d’intervention se sont développés. Ainsi pour Singer (1978), la psychologie sportive s’adresse à tout individu quelque soit son âge, son sexe et son niveau de pratique. Au contraire, pour d’autres auteurs comme Thomas (1983), elle s’adresse aux athlètes de haut niveau dans une perspective d’accroître sa performance.
La psychologie du sport contemporaine est marquée par la création du « Journal of sport psychology » en 1979.

Mais il faut attendre 1988 pour voir la participation de psychologues sportifs comme accompagnateurs de l’équipe olympique américaine.

Le XXIème siècle : l’ère de la performance sportive et donc de l’aide à la performance.
Depuis 1988, son essor est spectaculaire. Ce mouvement ne fait que s’accélérer avec un intérêt croissant du sport de haut niveau pour l’apport des psychologues. Mais aussi parce que ce sport de haut niveau connaît de fortes transformations et une médiatisation qui exacerbe ce phénomène et renforce les enjeux autour du sport de haut niveau. Un exemple de cette reconnaissance: l’équipe d’athlétisme des États-Unis, soit environ 180 athlètes, est encadrée pendant certains entraînements et pour les compétitions principales par quinze psychologues du sport, selon une répartition très fonctionnelle des tâches ; par exemple, un psychologue qui s’occupe des sauts horizontaux, un autre psychologue traite des sauts verticaux…

Cette légitimité du psychologue du sport contraste avec une problématique majeure autour de la profession, autour de la discipline professionnelle. Cette problématique est essentiellement centrée sur les exigences de formation et d’accréditation imposées. La psychologie du sport est régie dans la plupart des pays par une réglementation rigoureuse spécifiant la nécessité de l’obtention du titre de psychologue, titre légalement protégé. Or, une grande majorité des intervenants en psychologie du sport proviennent de formation des sciences du sport. Voir Charte des psychologues du sport.

Cette situation complexe constitue l’une des principales entraves au développement de cette profession. « Un collectif de psychologues s’était réuni à Dijon sous l’égide de la Société française de psychologie du sport (Gillot et Lévèque, 1989). Cette commission a rappelé qu’une relation clinique duelle constitue la matrice et la position de référence de toute intervention psychologique : établir une relation intersubjective avec l’athlète est la nécessité première pour écouter et analyser sa demande » (extrait de l’ouvrage Sport et psychologie.
