Le sport au féminin : un autre sport ?

Le sport féminin connaît une popularité moindre que leur congénère masculin dans la plupart des pratiques sportives. Il est souvent perçu comme moins spectaculaire, moins rapide, moins technique, moins athlétique…
Bref, il est perçu en terme de manque par rapport à la pratique masculine !
Et pourtant, certains s’érigent en faux contre ces représentations qui viennent entacher le sport au féminin.

 « Les femmes offrent surtout un autre style au jeu ou à la technique, en un mot, elles les féminisent » Catherine LOUVEAU, « Sport, Action et Société: la part des femmes »     

«  Le jeu s’empreint de psychologie féminine. C’est un sport en soi qui est seulement plus lent mais aussi plus technique, plus esthétique, plus visuel que celui des hommes » « A propos du sport féminin », La Croix, du 6/2/87
Ces différences sont d’abord liées à des représentations et stéréotypes sur la différence entre les sexes.
Schématiquement, ces stéréotypes sur la différence des sexes sont :

  • les filles sont plus sociales que les garçons.
  • Les filles ont une plus faible estime de soi que les garçons.
  • Les filles ont un niveau d’aptitude verbale plus élevée que les garçons.
  • Les garçons sont plus agressifs que les filles.
  • Les garçons ont plus d’aptitude visuo-spatiale que les filles.
  • Les garçons ont plus d’aptitude aux mathématiques que les filles.
  • Les filles ont moins de motivation que les garçons.

L’étude de Maccoby et Jacklin en 1974 porte sur plus de 2000 articles et montrent une différence entre les sexes dans seulement quatre domaines :

  • L’aptitude aux mathématiques.
  • L’aptitude visuo-spatiale.
  • L’aptitude verbale.
  • Et la disposition à l’agressivité.

Il y a donc plus de recoupements et de similitudes entre les sexes que de différences et ces différences sont essentiellement d’ordre culturel.

Des différences culturelles très précoces :

  • Dès l’acquisition de la marche, les garçons sont incités à explorer leur environnement et à faire des activités physiques, alors que les filles sont essentiellement protégées de l’environnement.

  • Les consignes ou messages fréquemment transmis aux filles:

–      Ne joue pas brutalement et fais attention à ne pas te faire mal.
–      Ne salis pas tes vêtements.
–      Ne t’éloigne pas trop de la maison.

  • La réussite chez la fille est attribuée à son travail et son sérieux.
  • La réussite chez le garçon est attribuée  à ses aptitudes.

Les représentations sociales de l’activité sportive.
Une étude de Eccles (1983) sur 3000 adolescents et effectuée sur 3 ans, porte sur le choix de l’activité sportive en fonction du genre.

Chez les filles :

  • Dès les premières années scolaires, les filles évaluent leur aptitude athlétique générale de façon plus négative que les garçons.
  • Elles se croient moins aptes à réussir en sport qu’à l’école.
  • Elles considèrent le sport comme moins important que les autres activités.

Chez les garçons :

  • Ils jugent que le sport est d’une importance égale voir supérieure aux autres activités scolaires.
  • Ils s’identifient très tôt à des sportifs de haut niveau.
  • Ils expriment une facilité plus importante à réussir dans le sport plutôt que dans d’autres activités.

Ces différences sont le résultat de la façon dont les parents, l’école, les stéréotypes relatifs aux rôles associés au sexe influencent les valeurs et les attentes. Les parents dans ce processus jouent un rôle prépondérant.
Les représentations parentales de l’activité sportive.

  • Les parents estiment le talent sportif de leur fille moins important que celui de leur fils, et ceci dès la maternelle.
  • Les parents orientent davantage leur fils que leur fille vers des activités sportives.
  • Les enseignants et éducateurs sportifs jugent les garçons plus compétents en sport que les filles.

Perception de l’athlète féminine: Ambivalence entre le concept de féminité et la compétition.

  • Le sport de compétition est associé aux images de force, de puissance, de rudesse, d’agressivité, de réussite.
  • La perception de la féminité est à l’opposée de ces images.

Les sports les moins acceptables pour les femmes sont les sports où il y a une tentative « de dominer physiquement un adversaire par le contact physique » (Metheny)

Sports à représentativité masculine :

  • Ce sont donc des sports comme la boxe, le rugby, la lutte, le football..
  • Mais le handball véhicule également cette image en tant que sport de contact.

  • D’autant plus que les athlètes féminines qui participent à des sports collectifs, jouissent d’un statut significativement moindre auprès de leurs pairs (garçons et filles) que les filles qui s’adonnent à des sports individuels.

Représentativité féminine dans le sport de haut niveau (Issue des assises nationales sur « femmes et sport », 1999) 

  • Les épreuves: 40% des épreuves olympiques ou de haut niveau sont féminines.
  • Nombres de sportives de haut niveau et les aides accordées: 30% sont des femmes, 30% de la délégation olympique (tous pays confondus) sont des femmes, 30% des aides pour le sport de haut niveau sont pour les femmes.
  • Encadrement: 14% de l’encadrement technique et 8% des juges et arbitres de haut niveau sont des femmes.

Différences hommes/femmes dans leurs rapports à la compétition
Chez les femmes :

  • La maîtrise de la tâche est la motivation principale. La victoire est une motivation moindre.
  • La notion de contact est différente.
  • Elles estiment leurs compétences de façon réaliste.

« Elles se font mieux à l’idée qu’il puisse exister des joueuses plus fortes. C’est donc plus facile de faire accepter un rôle moins en lumière à l’une ou l’autre, alors que les garçons préfèrent tous être en première page des magazines! »

  • Le niveau d’anxiété est plus élevé chez les femmes que chez les hommes.
  • Elles recherchent davantage un leadership de type démocratique.

« De temps en temps, on serait tenté de penser que la solution passe par la dureté du langage. Ca peut donc arriver, mais je ne suis pas certain que ce soit efficace avec un groupe féminin. Il vaut mieux faire comprendre les choses de manière souple.»

  • Le besoin de valorisation et de confiance en soi est un facteur de performance.
  • La relation duelle à l’entraîneur est privilégiée.
  • Le partage émotionnel, l’affectif, le plaisir, sont des paramètres de bien être au sein de l’équipe.

« Il faut que chacune puisse prendre du plaisir dans son rôle. Je veille donc à placer chaque fille sur le même pied d’égalité. Parce qu’une équipe féminine vit très mal le manque d’équité. C’est ce genre de petit détail qui peut vous faire partir sur une bonne saison… ou une mauvaise…»

  • La cohésion de l’équipe est un paramètre essentiel de la performance.

Différences hommes/femmes dans leurs rapports à la compétition et à la motivation

  • Les hommes ont un niveau plus élevé de compétitivité et d’orientation vers la victoire que les femmes, et les femmes sont plus que les hommes, dans la recherche d’atteinte d’objectifs personnels.
  • Les hommes participent plus que les femmes à des sports de compétition.

Propos D’Emmanuel Lorette, entraîneur de l’équipe féminine de Rugby de Villeneuve d’Ascq (propos recueillis dans la Voix des Sports, 19/11/2007)

« Moi, j’aime leur attention, leur réactivité, cette faculté d’assimiler plusieurs choses à la fois et plus vite. Mais comme ce sont des pipelettes, elles oublient parfois un peu vite ce qu’on a travaillé! J’aime aussi leur nécessité de comprendre tout ce qu’on fait. On ne retrouve pas ça chez les garçons. Ca ne laisse pas de place à l’improvisation, c’est un moteur pour moi. »

Entraîner une équipe féminine : des différences notoires à maîtriser sous peine d’implosion !

« Je me suis très vite rendu compte qu’il n’y avait pas que le terrain à gérer. Chez les garçons, on vit dans l’instant. Il y a parfois des situations un peu conflictuelles pendant l’entraînement. Mais quand la séance se termine, c’est fini. Or, les filles peuvent se rappeler longtemps ce qui s’est passé auparavant. En cas d’accrochage, mieux vaut régler ça tout de suite avant que ça explose, un mois et demis plus tard! » Fabrice Courcier, entraîneur de basket féminin de Saint-Amand.

 « On analyse tout, tout le temps, pour voir comment faire le mieux possible. Notre entraîneur doit toujours modifier ses exercices parce que à chaque fois, on discute.» Alexandra Pertus, joueuse de rugby à Villeneuve d’Ascq (D1, Elite).

« Sinon, le grand travers des filles, c’est le ‘oui, mais’. Quand l’entraîneur nous dit quelque chose, il ya toujours une fille pour lui répondre ‘oui, mais’..C’est typiquement féminin et ça nous fait perdre du temps » Olivia Rooyackers, basketteuse dans différents clubs professionnels.
